Dawn's Dad, the Lutheran

Catch-up: Dawn's mom outed her to her dad a few weeks ago. This was after she had agreed that because of his religious views and failing health that he shouldn't be told.

This is his first contact with her since.

Dear Daughter,
My Love for you will always be there. My heart is very heavy.
I cannot accept your chosen life style.
Your mother and I will always welcome you and our grandchildren with open arms. I cannot accept your chosen family into my home.
You should revisit your Christian upbringing. Mostly the 4th commandment as in the Small Lutheran Catechism.
God Bless, Love Dad

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean
on your own understanding".
Proverbs 3:5

I had to ask, too. The 4th Commandment, which Dawn keeps slipping and calling the 4th Amendment which, strangely enough, protects against search and seizure without probable cause, is "Honor thy Mother and thy Father." I expected it to be "Thou shalt not commit Adultery."

Hmmmm. Any ideas?

  1. selecting which grandchildren are his? this is just too sad. isn't there something written about unconditional love?

my Mother wouldn't allow me to bring R to my niece's wedding so I know how this feels. i told her if R couldn't go neither would i, so i missed the wedding.

  2. Dawn told me about her sister's situation too. It still surprises me somehow, every time someone can hold such a double standard. Dawn said she wouldn't let him by a hypocrite. And she shouldn't. But she shouldn't have to engage in bible quote wars either.

It has always seemed that the brightest stars shining with love are the ones most visible. You two just keep loving each other, and the life, joy, and happy children that flow out of that will be proof (I hate to use that word) if anyone needs it.

  3. Hang in there. I am in a similiar situation, although we do not have children yet. But, both sets of parents were vehemently opposed. We both come from very christian backgrounds and "it's just not ok". However, we have taken it slow and not pushed anything on our parents. Mine have been over to our house twice for dinner. And just today we received an invitation to her parent's house for tonight, for BOTH of us! We have strict instructions to behave as "friends, friends, friends", but still, this seems like such huge progress. I know we don't know each other, but I thought my story might bring some hope. Hang in there! If nothing else, I tell myself over and over, even if things never improve with our families, I wouldn't trade my girl for the world, I can't expect everything to be perfect, right? ;)
